Marlin Ebbert’s Summertime Blueberry Pie won over the judges’ palates at Pie on the Porch last Saturday. Close to 100 people came out despite rainy weather to tour the historic Merrick House and get a taste of the 23 competing pies.
John Carr, who presented the judges with a rich and spicy chocolate-pecan tart called Moctezuma’s Delight, earned second place, and third place was awarded to Lucila Jimenez’s fruit bomba creme brulee pie.
Honorable mentions were awarded to Robert Barnum for his longan walnut bolaraisin pie, Carol Garvin for her Yam I Am pie and Jana White for her passion fruit pie.
Chief Justice of Pie Hedy Goldsmith (Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink) judged the pies with Victoria Pesce Elliott (Miami Herald restaurant critic); Glenn Terry (King Mango Strut); Janet Van Aken (the woman behind the chef and investor at Norman’s 180); John Critchley (Executive Chef, Area 31); Kristin Connor (Whisk Gourmet, South Miami); and Ariana Kumpis (Ariana’s Etiquette and Les Dammes d’Escoffier).
The recipe for the winning pie will be published in the October issue of Edible South Florida. For now, indulge in these photos and head over to The Genuine Kitchen (the food blog of Michael’s Genuine) and Short Order for other recaps of the event.
